The XR Summit brings together key stakeholders in experiential technology at a pivotal moment in the era of rapid technological advancements and digital transformation. As “Digital India” continues to rise, it’s crucial to evaluate the current landscape of experiential technologies and address the existing skill gaps to ensure sustainable growth and innovation. IIT Madras is uniquely positioned to lead this effort, thanks to its cutting-edge Haptics Lab and the IoE Center for VR and Haptics, both at IIT Madras. Supported by a dynamic community of industry leaders within the CAVE consortium, facilitated through https://XTIC.org, IIT Madras serves as a driving force in advancing XR technologies in India.

Why attend this event

This event marks India’s first Academia-Industry-supported XR Summit. While there have been numerous AR/VR events in India, previous XR gatherings were exclusively industry-led. The XR Summit is unique in bringing together academia and industry, a crucial collaboration for driving innovation. Without this partnership, there’s a risk that young talent in India could be reduced to mere “digital laborers” in the XR field.
Global XR leaders like Steve LaValle will be attending in person, with others such as Mel Slater and Mandayam Srinivasan from MIT Touch Lab joining online. The event also offers opportunities to network with industrialists, startups, and government agencies, alongside the chance to meet global XR experts.
This summit will also feature collaboration with AWE (Augmented World Expo), a premier global VR/AR event since 2010 that has been inspiring a community of professionals, innovators, and creators in XR. This year, we will host an exclusive AWE Evening during the summit, laying the groundwork for a full-fledged AWE event in India by 2026. This year’s participation is a trial run.
As the inaugural event for the CAVE consortium, founded in 2022, we will also be announcing several awards to honor and promote the contributions of startups in XR, creating further networking opportunities within the industry.
Coinciding with this event is the completion of an NPTEL course co-taught by myself and Steve LaValle, with around 600 participants. The top 10% of students from this NPTEL course, based on their performance, will be invited to join the summit.
This Summit marks the beginning of an annual tradition of XR Summits, with plans to expand to New York and Los Angeles in 2025.

Driving Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Our Labs

We push the boundaries of technology in pursuit of certain breakthroughs. IIT madras is offering various lab sessions to explore and identify new technologies. Here we provided Lab’s Complete Information and Features. Dedicated researchers, students and staff accompany visitors to the labs, on a voluntary basis, offering their expertise and knowledge and demonstrating the mission and research activities of the IIT Madras.

Media Studio

The Media Studio is open to all IIT Madras Students. It was created to assist students to make multimedia assets as stand-alone content or as part of marketing and outreach. If space allows, those working on other non-academic ventures and projects can use the studio for content creation. The Media studio has the equipment to create audio content, visual content, and podcasts.

AR/VR Studio

The AR/VR Studio is a keen space for the study of leading-edge immersive technologies both physically and imaginatively. The AR/VR Studio is fortified with technologies that include various software and design platforms, multiple headset configurations, workstations, and filming resources to help students research and create innovations in a vast range of industrial sectors.

Haptics Lab

The IIT Madras Haptics Lab is a resource available to all current students from IIT Madras who are looking to explore innovation and entrepreneurship at any stage.

The Haptics Lab provides all the physical and intellectual resources IIT Madras students need to develop and grow, including one-to-one advising, workshops, an incubator program, and a competition. Open co-working space is also available for any IIT-M student looking to grow as an innovator.

Maker Lab

The Maker Lab was created to help students get involved with making and creating. These labs are available to students of IIT Madras so future students can have a chance to make creative projects. It was designed to do this originally; its purpose was to help students get in and make. Students who use the space are interested in what others are working on when in the Maker Lab. Having this space has also allowed for a Maker Club to form on campus for students to work on projects together.

Manufacturing Lab

The Manufacturing Processes (MP) Laboratory provides students with the opportunity to study and practice manufacturing processes. This lab provides students experiential learning with the nature and technique of manufacturing processes. Students can set up and operate machines, manufacture parts, measure process variables, and inspect manufactured parts.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is about delivering a complete immersive ( generating a 3-dimensional image that appears to surround the user ) experience. The whole physical world can be transformed into the things that we imagine in virtual reality. Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Google Cardboard are some of the notable devices in virtual reality that help to transport humans to a new imaginary world.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality focuses on bringing a live view from the digital elements using a camera on a smartphone or a PC.AR is one of the biggest trends in technology at this moment and making electronic gadgets more manageable around the globe. In Augmented Reality, digital information is overlaid onto the actual physical world.

Mixed Reality

Mixed Reality is also referred to as Hybrid Reality, using MR one can able to manipulate the digital images that are overlapped onto the real world. It produces new environments and visualizations, where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real-time. Somewhere between AR & VR, Mixed Reality takes place not only in the physical or the virtual world but is a mix of actual reality and virtual reality.

Haptic technology

Haptic technology is all about the sense of touch. Using Haptic technology it is possible to simulate virtual objects that can be touched. The sense of touch allows one to experience different sensations and is the fundamental component of Haptic communication. For instance, vibration in a cell phone, rumble in the game controller.
